View fullsize The Centurion. Sometime around the 2nd Century AD, as recorded on the 'Goldcliff Stone', the Roman centurion Statorius Maximus led soldiers from the 1st cohort of the 2nd Augustan Legion on to the Levels to construct ditches and embankments.
View fullsize The Centurion is composed of 3000 individual laser-cut pieces of Corten steel. The steel forms a rusty outer coat that protects the metal underneath. The layers are spaced to allow light to pass through, giving the figure a spectral quality.
